Capoeira Documentary Movie:

Trailer http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=81546

An invitation to make a tax-deductible donation to support a great cause and world wide artform.

Please help us in our goal to raise $15,000 to complete a wonderful independent documentary film – "Let the Circle Be Unbroken".

So why make a donation? Well, in the first place, contributions will directly help to finish the post-production of the film and help to launch distribution of this film that so many people have expressed an interest in seeing. As a further commitment, we have committed to donating a share of the profits to a charity established to assist with the financial support of the older Capoeira masters and their families.

About the film:

Gerson, a 79 year-old capoeira master is imprisoned as a result of the Brazilian government's official persecution of the art-form. He struggles to reconcile his experience of ostracism with capoeira's current popularity.

Ciro Lima, a younger capoeira master represents a powerful, mobilizing force for effecting change. Capoeira is his weapon for fighting the forced gentrification which is taking place in the centre of Salvador. Set in Bahia, Brazil and driven by these two charismatic but contrasting characters, the captivating documentary strives to find the contemporary relevance of capoeira, the "dance-fight game" that symbolized the struggle for freedom.

The film addresses a number of critical issues including the passing of tradition, the exploitation of culture and Brazil's conflicted relationship with its own Afro-Brazilian heritage.

About Capoeira:

Capoeira is an Afro-Brazilian art form that evolved from traditional dances, games and rituals which were taken to Brazil by the African slaves. Because of the specific exigencies of slavery, the art-form evolved into the "dance-fight game" typified by the fluid, acrobatic yet dangerous movements. The Africans, working in tandem with the indigenous peoples, created a form of self-defense that could be used both to free themselves from slavery and also to defend themselves from retaliatory attacks by plantation owners and enforcers.

It also served as a way of maintaining the link with their homeland and their humanity.

The Brazilian government however, viewed capoeira as a scourge and a serious threat to the status quo. It went to extreme lengths to erase Capoeira from history, setting up police squads, whose sole purpose it was, to beat, torture, imprison and even kill anyone associated with the art-form.

This official persecution was enshrined in the Brazilian constitution. Indeed a bill was passed in 1889, a full year after slavery was abolished. The government was almost successful in its goal and it's only due to the defiance and perseverance of a small number of selfless capoeira masters who risked their lives, that Capoeira still exists today.

Today, Capoeira is practiced by men, women and children of all ages, class and nationality. It is the fastest growing sport in the world with fanatical following from Brazil to Japan, from Bosnia to Australia. However, for the many millions of marginalized Brazilians, it remains pertinent and vital as ever.

In the words of Mestre Ciro Lima:
"There is no capoeira without masters. It's not just any man from Bahia that is a mestre de capoeira. They are very special people. We have to show all respect and reverence to these people that have kept this art-form, this African sport, capoeira alive. They struggled in an incredibly precarious situation – these people were seen as slaves and being seen as marginalized by Brazil, they were able to teach us things that our biological parents could not".

Where we are

We are in the final stages of postproduction and hope to be able to complete the film by September so we can begin submitting it to film festivals and shop it around to potential distributors. Most of the production was done on a very modest budget and we now require completion funds to pay for the finishing expenses (sound mix/design, color correction and titles) and also to help launch distribution.
